3 Ways to Be Authentically You, When Writing

Writing is a powerful means of self-expression and communication, but it’s not just about conveying information—it’s also about revealing your authentic self. When you write with authenticity, your words resonate on a deeper level with your readers. It fosters a connection, builds trust, and makes your content, course, or nonfiction book truly memorable.

So, why is authenticity so crucial, and how can you infuse it into your writing?

You’re probably wondering why authenticity matters…

Authenticity in writing is like a breath of fresh air in a world filled with manufactured content. It’s about being genuine, honest, and transparent in your words. For service-based business owners, like me, my clients feel like they know, like, and trust me, because I’m authentic.

There was a time when I didn’t write authentically, and that’s because I didn’t believe in myself. I didn’t think I was worthy of being a writer, and therefore, I was trying to write like someone else. It got me nowhere as my writing reflected this – I lacked confidence in my own abilities. I mean, if you went to the store to buy ‘the best’ vacuum cleaner, but the salesperson in the store said they ‘think’ it may be the best, but doesn’t sound wholly convinced, would you buy it? I know I wouldn’t. So, how can I expect people to buy from me, if I didn’t really believe I could do it?

I was also unhappy at this time because I was trying to be something I was not, and this was shown in my writing. Trust me, writing as your authentic self brings happiness, and ensures you’re comfortable with your writing. This makes a difference!

Authentic writing builds trust. Your readers are more likely to trust and connect with a writer who is open and authentic. When you share your genuine thoughts, experiences, and insights, you create a bond with your audience based on trust. Authentic writing also resonates with readers. It touches the hearts of readers. It reflects the human experience—complete with imperfections, vulnerabilities, and triumphs—making it relatable and emotionally resonant. Authentic writing also sets you apart from others. Within the sea of content that’s out there, your unique voice and perspective set you apart. Authenticity distinguishes you from others and makes your writing memorable.

Three Ways to Be Authentically You in Your Writing:

  1. Embrace Your Unique Voice: Your voice is your writing signature, and it’s what makes your content stand out. To embrace your unique voice:
    • Reflect on Your Values: Consider what matters most to you as a writer and a person. Your values shape your voice, so infuse them into your writing.
    • Be Fearlessly Honest: Authenticity often means revealing your vulnerabilities and sharing your personal experiences, even if they include setbacks or challenges. Honesty is compelling.
    • Write as You Speak: Imagine you’re having a conversation with a friend. Write in a conversational tone that mirrors your spoken voice. Avoid overly formal or forced language.
  2. Share Personal Stories and Insights: Personal stories are windows into your experiences, and they help readers relate to you on a human level. To share personal stories authentically:
    • Find Universal Themes: Identify the universal themes within your personal stories. What lessons, emotions, or insights can others glean from your experiences?
    • Show Vulnerability: Don’t shy away from sharing moments of vulnerability or failure. These are often the most relatable and valuable aspects of your journey.
    • Connect to Your Message: Ensure that your personal stories align with the message or lesson you want to convey. Stories should support and enhance your writing’s purpose.
  3. Stay True to Your Values and Beliefs: Your writing is an extension of your beliefs and values. To stay true to them:
    • Clarify Your Values: Take time to reflect on your core values and beliefs. What do you stand for? What messages do you want to convey through your writing?
    • Set Boundaries: Be clear about the topics or approaches that align with your values. Don’t compromise your principles for the sake of trends or popularity.
    • Speak Your Truth: Don’t be afraid to express your opinions and perspectives, even if they differ from mainstream views. Authenticity requires courage in sharing your truth.

Authenticity in writing is about being true to yourself, your voice, and your values. It’s about embracing your uniqueness and sharing it with the world. When you write authentically, you create a powerful connection with your readers, leaving a lasting impact. So, remember: Be you, be authentic, and let your writing shine with the brilliance of your true self.
